Northland Health Group

Organization:

University of Pennsylvania Health System
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

What they wanted:
The University of Pennsylvania Health System (UPHS) acquired/merged with Pennsylvania Hospital in November 1997, following a similar absorption of Presbyterian Medical Center the prior year. Due to the volatile nature of the Philadelphia market, UPHS needed to ensure rationalization of clinical services while maintaining its academic mission.
What we did:
Tracy Kulik of Northland Health Group managed the project that assisted UPHS identify three triggers to determine when a clinical program might be consolidated. These were: market share; financial solvency; and, mission. The results of this engagement were: Stability of the medical staff with a structured spectrum of access issues that defined faculty vs. community incentives and accountabilities; a methodology to develop clinical service lines which recognized research, education, and clinical contributions; a logical process to determine when a given clinical service warranted rationalization; and consensus that the immediate task was to grow market share. Realization that consolidation would cede market share to competitors in 1997/98. Back to Mid-Atlantic
