Organization:
St. Joseph Hospital/Sunbury Primary Care Group
Bangor, Maine
What they wanted:
Faced with patient attrition to a large tertiary care center on the other side of town, St. Joseph Hospital turned to Northland Health Group to develop a strategy for recapturing patients. The area was faced with a primary care shortage of between 12-15 physicians.
What we did:
NHG developed a primary care network strategy in the form of a PHO/MSO joint venture between 7 solo practice physicians and the hospital. Under a management contract, NHG grew the network to 42 providers within a three-year period. NHG negotiated all managed care contracts for the joint venture during the 4-year MSO history. SJH census improved dramatically, especially in combination with a hospitalist program added as a result of the PHO efforts. As the organization matured, the physicians agreed two years ago to form their own group practice. Relationships between the hospital and the physicians are better than ever and St. Joseph just completed its most successful financial year in the past decade.
