Organization:
Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
What they wanted:
We have assisted Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) with a variety of faculty planning, service line planning, and benchmarking studies. Each engagement was to consider clinical, education, and research organization, structure, and opportunities.
We assisted:
- CHOP faculty with the consolidation of the four practice plans Pediatrics, Surgery, Anesthesia and Critical Care, and Radiology into a single plan with shared governance and financial controls.
- The Divisions of Cardiac Surgery, Cardiology and Cardiac Anesthesiology with involvement by Cardiac Nursing, Cardiopulmonary Services asked us to assess their service, with specific goals to streamline their care process, develop global billing and compare CHOP to other preeminent programs.
- The new Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine chair engaged us as objective, external reviewers of the department from a business perspective, with the goal to retain academic dominance in the field while maintaining the surgical machine for which CHOP is recognized. External opinions were sought pertaining to the research, education, clinical, and managed care contracting positions. Quantitative comparisons were provided for specific reference points such as operating room turn-around time, research rank, and percent of departmental funds allotted to research and education.
